Directions to Munford

These are directions as found from a fan on al.com

If you are planning on driving down I65 and connecting to I20 in Birmingham, you probably plan to take the Oxford exit (Hwy 21). You should probably plan to eat at one of the many restaurants in the Oxford area around that I20 exit. Munford has two places to eat, either "Big Daddy's BBQ" or "The Glass House". Other than that you will probably need to stop in Oxford to eat. You have probably looked up the directions, but to get to Munford you continue to travel down Hwy. 21 south until you reach Munford. Don't get disoriented by thinking the stadium is at the new Munford High School which is on your left as you travel south on Hwy 21. The stadium (Holcombe Field) is actually adjacent to the old high school which will be on your right and will be a right turn off Hwy 21. Munford is a just a small community so make sure you are aware that the field is not visible from Hwy 21 and you'll need to turn right off that road and go maybe a 1/4 mile to reach the field

Brook's Top Five: Dectaur Daily

Class 1A-3A top five
1. Hazlewood: Looked good in 2005 and has the talent to better last year's 8-4 record. The Bears return 15 starters from last year.
2. R.A. Hubbard: Even after a 6-6 record last year, the Chiefs still know how to win. If anything, last season will serve as motivation.
3. Addison: The Bulldogs will have to prove themselves in 2A after winning the 1A state title in 2005, but they're solid enough to have success in their new classification.
4. Tanner: The Rattlers have been consistent for several years. This season could be a more physical version than the Rattlers' opponents are accustomed to seeing. Stable offensive line should allow Tanner to post some strong numbers.
5. West Morgan: A tradition-rich program, the Rebels should be able to exercise a little confidence from the past as they move from 3A to 2A.

West Morgan's Andrew Elliott
Nose to nose with ...West Morgan's Andrew Elliott
In the middle of a busy week of practice and preparing for the season-opener, West Morgan senior linebacker/tight end Andrew Elliott sat down for 10 questions with THE DAILY's Brooke Milam:
Question: You were one of the area's leading tacklers last year with 143 stops. Can you repeat the performance this season?
Answer: I'm going to try to up my numbers. (Fellow senior linebacker) David Allen and I help each other. We compete with each other. Every game we come back and try to do better.
Q: What's the most amazing tackle you've ever seen?
A: The most amazing tackle I've ever seen had to be in a Baltimore Ravens game. Ray Lewis — all of his tackles, really.
Q: If you weren't an outside linebacker or a tight end, what position would you best be suited for?
A: If I wasn't a linebacker I'd probably be a free safety. On offense, I'd probably be a fullback.
Q: What's something you're good at besides football?
A: Basketball. I've played both sports since I was little. I probably started when I was 5. They're different, but desire and love for the game help with both.
Q: What's the last book you read?
A: The book we're reading in English right now. It's about ancient history stuff, Anglo-Saxons.
Q: What goals have you personally made for this season?
A: First, for everybody to play well together. Then to make the state playoffs.
Q: What coach or teammate encourages you the most?
A: David Allen. We kind of keep each other going.
Q: Who's the person who makes you laugh the most?
A: Walter Jones, he's just a silly personality. We play the same position, and he's been my friend since we were kids. We've played together since Pee Wee league and then in middle school and now.
Q: What's usually the first thing you think about when you wake up in the morning?
A: How I can make my day better than it was yesterday.
Q: What will you remember the most about football besides Friday nights?
A: I guess just all the crazy times down here in the fieldhouse and in the weight room.

Power Poll

Three rivals flood the top five

The Power Poll is solely devoted to schools in the Highschoolgameday coverage area. This list does not consider classification, only the outlook for the upcoming season and the dominance it will display on the field. It is not a gospel, only how we rate the programs heading into the 2006 campaign.

This is the first Power Poll in a long line. Each Monday (starting after week one) we will release a new one complete with updated records, who the team beat and who they will face next.

Clay County—(3A Region 5)—easily the most dominant team in the area over the last decade. With most of the talent returning, the Panthers will once again reign supreme in East Alabama, and throughout the state.

Woodland—(2A Region 5)—tabbed the odds-on-favorite in the grueling 2A Region 5, the Bobcats return a deep senior class, most of whom have tasted the Super Six. The hype is based in fact. This team is extremely hungry following an injury plagued 2005.

Cherokee County—(4A Region 6)—this team was one fluke play away from brining home the 3A State Championship last season. This year they are out to capture the 4A crown. With a couple division 1A prospects leading the way, they will be tough to stop.

Cedar Bluff—(1A Region 7)—the talent of Cedar Bluff’s top two players has been well documented over the summer. Outside of quarterback Jamie Hampton and lineman Austin Hayes lies an overlooked squad, who harness the talent for big things.

Lineville—(2A Region 5)—the Lineville Aggies are more talented than usual, which does not bode well for their opponents. This traditionally talented group has been touted as his most athletic team ever by head coach Steve Giddens. We expect to see Woodland and Lineville in the 2A state semi-final.

Alexandria—(4A Region 6)—if you’re one of those counting Alexandria out because of what they lost, you might want to think again. The Valley Cubs will have a few new faces in the paper this season but the results might turn out the same.

Etowah—(5A Region 7)—despite losing playmakers at running back and defensive end, the Blue Devils return a more experienced team overall. They’ve tasted back-to-back region titles in 2004 and 2005, meanwhile running out of gas in the post-season. This time, look for their success to go beyond the first round or two.

Heflin—(4A Region 3)—losing homerun threats Arsenio Hayes, Deontae Carter, quarterback Koty Morehead and all but one offensive lineman would usually spell doom for most schools. Heflin has once again reloaded and will contend for big things in the South.

Pell City—(6A Region 7)—we would love to place the Panthers higher on our list, but it would be tough to do considering they lost 23 seniors off last year’s squad. A former coach recently told us that despite the loss, Pell City will repeat the success of the past few years.

Gadsden—(6A Region 7)—you better catch them early and you better hit them hard. With arguably the most talented set of skill positions in East Alabama, possibly the northern half of the state, the Titans will make a lot of noise if they gel in time.

Tanner In Newscourier

Rattlers preparing for county rivals with short week of work
By Justin GravesJustin@athensnews-courier.comTANNER – With a short week of practice and a lackluster preseason jamboree performance last week, Tanner coach LaRon White said his team needs to pick up the intensity before they open the season at Clements Thursday night.“We looked good and bad last week at Speake,” White said. “I wasn’t pleased with everything we did in our jamboree. We’ve got to pick up the intensity.”With the game on Thursday night, it means Tanner only has two full days of practice. White is turning to his 10 seniors to make sure everything is strictly business at practice this week.“It’s up to us to make sure everybody is in high gear this week,” senior defensive back George Adams said. “Every game is important, so we have to get as much work in as possible this week.”Even though White doesn’t exactly like the short week of work, he said his biggest obstacle this week is preparing for a team they aren’t sure about. Clements has completely different coaching staff than last year and White isn’t exactly sure what to expect.“We know they are going to run a spread offense and they have a lot players returning from last year,” White said. “So we know they are going to spread the field out and throw the ball a lot. The big question is what to expect from their defense.”One area White wants to address this week in practice is the team’s physical mentality. He knows Clements returns the bulk of its starters from last year, including leading rusher Jesse Cobb and the team’s top playmaker Cody Arnold.“We’re going to have to be physical, especially on defense,” Adams said. “We’ve got a lot of big guys on our team this year, but they’re all real young. Clements has a lot of experience coming back, so we have to be ready to play.“We can’t take anything for granted. The main thing we do is make sure we’re ready to play by Thursday. We’re going to have to pick up the intensity and be a hard-nosed football team.”Even though White wants to get as much work in as possible this week, he doesn’t plan on throwing too much at his team. “We’re going to get our work in, but that doesn’t mean we’re going to practice longer than usual,” he said. “I don’t want to overload these guys.“Everybody is real excited about finally getting the season started. It’s real important that we come out and set the tone early this year. We’re starting a new season and we want to get off to a good start.”

Articles of Note

Class 2AAddison
Head coach: Randy White (14-1 in one season as head coach at Addison).
2005 record: 14-1, won Class 1A state championship.
Win totals for 2001-05: 12-8-11-9-14.
Whom to watch in 2006: Quarterback Jake Gilliland returns from last year's state title-winning team and the senior has the leadership qualities to lead the Bulldogs back again. He's also a linebacker. Look for Blake Turner to fill in the shoes of DAILY all-area player of the year Caleb Parker at tailback. Jesse Wiggins will be a leader at center and at linebacker, and there might be a surprise in store if Addison uses junior Andrew Privett at quarterback and splits Gilliland off at tailback for a few series.
What to watch: It'll be interesting to see how this team responds from its first state title since 1976, and just how much of that had to do with Parker.
When to watch: After a tough 41-6 loss to Clay County in Saturday's Champions Challenge, it gets no easier this week when the Bulldogs host R.A. Hubbard. A visit to West Morgan on Oct. 27 could have region title implications.
Why to watch: Let's see if Addison is up to the competition level of 2A football, which is a step up from last season. The Bulldogs might not notice much of a change from last year, but will be tested if they make a deep playoff run.

Tanner
Head coach: Laron White (27-9 in three seasons at Tanner).
2005 record: 10-3. Made it to the quarterfinals of the state playoffs.
Win totals for 2001-05: 3-7-10-7-10.
Whom to watch in 2006: Demarcus King already has proven himself as one of the top quarterbacks in the area. He threw for 1,845 yards and 12 touchdowns last season. Although most of his best skill-position players have graduated, he should remain a solid passer and leader for the Tanner offense.
The offensive line bears watching, too, with senior tackle Matt Smith, sophomore tackle Amos Draper and senior center Kenny James. All three are solid.
What to watch: White is looking for his team to play more physical at the line of scrimmage, and he's shown in his three previous seasons at Tanner that he's good at getting what he wants from his offense.
The defense should be good, too, after a year in which the Rattlers gave up eight points or less in its 10 regular-season games.
When to watch: The Rattlers face West Morgan on Sept. 8 in the second game of the season. It's the first Class 2A, Region 8 game for both teams, and West Morgan's first region game since moving from 3A. This could turn into one of the best small-school rivalries in the area.
Tanner hosts Red Bay on Sept. 15, and those two schools have played great games the last four years. The Rattlers won last year 48-21 after a series of close contests. Tanner travels to East Limestone on Sept. 28 after winning this matchup last year 19-18 on a late touchdown and extra point.
Why to watch: Tanner has turned into an excellent 2A program, and even though the Rattlers lost 13 seniors from last year's squad, they're good enough that others are waiting to step forward. Can they match last year's record, which included 10 wins and a state quarterfinal berth? Who knows? But the possibility is there.

Hatton
Head coach: Paul Czervionke (1-9 in his second year at the the school. Went 12-8 in two seasons at Speake in 1996-97.)
2005 record: 1-9. Did not make the state playoffs.
Win totals 2001-2005: 6-9-2-7-1.
Whom to watch in 2006: Senior Nathan Berryman (5-foot-7, 130) moves into quarterback slot after a strong 2005 at wide receiver. His ability, smarts and instincts will be called upon throughout the season. The Hornets return their entire secondary, which should be a plus.
What to watch: The Hornets have had a year to learn Czervionke's spread offense. Better execution should lead to more productive drives for Hatton.
When to watch: On Sept. 1, the Hornets visit Speake, where Czervionke coached for two years. The next week, Hatton travels to Class 1A champion Addison. On Sept. 29, longtime rival Lawrence County visits Hatton.
Why to watch: Czervionke has preached better conditioning through running and weight lifting will help make his team a winner. Czervionke and his players don't plan to disappoint with another dismal season.

West Morgan
Head coach: Pierre Coggins (31-13 in four seasons as head coach at West Morgan).
2005 record: 5-5. Did not make state playoffs.
Win totals for 2001-05: 10-11-10-5-5.
Whom to watch in 2006: Senior linebackers Andrew Elliott and David Allen give West Morgan a boost on defense. Elliott made THE DAILY's all-area team after making 143 tackles. Allen made honorable mention all-area.
The kicking game is solid with junior Jared Spooner as place-kicker and punter. He made all-area as well and has held the starting job since eighth grade. It's hard for small schools to find reliable kickers, and West Morgan has one.
What to watch: With a new quarterback in Josh McAbee, it might seem like West Morgan's offense could start slow. But the Rebels have a senior-dominated offensive line in front of him, and a solid receiving corps that has the potential to be great. That will help take some of the pressure off the new quarterback, but even so, McAbee's coach and teammates appear to have great confidence in his athletic ability.
When to watch: In their first season in Class 2A, Region 8, the Rebels will face three tough region games in the second, third and fourth weeks of the season when they host Tanner on Sept. 8, visit Phil Campbell on Sept. 15 and host Red Bay on Sept. 22.
Even without playoff implications, all three simply should be fun, exciting games for football fans, especially the one against Tanner. Both programs are solid and well-respected in the area, and West Morgan coach Pierre Coggins and Tanner coach Laron White are friends as well.
Don't overlook the season opener — West Morgan at Munford on Friday. It's a tough way to start. Munford made the second round of the 3A state playoffs last season.
Why to watch: Although West Morgan is dropping from 3A to 2A, the road to the playoffs isn't much easier. The Rebels landed in a tough region, but with a roster that includes 17 seniors, they've got the ability to handle it.
After consecutive 5-5 seasons that ended without playoff berths, this West Morgan team is eager to get back into the spotlight. With that motivation, this group should be even more interesting to watch than usual.

Championship Challenge

Panthers cash in on Bulldogs' turnovers
Sunday, August 27, 2006
SCOTT McNEISH and WESLEY HALLMANNews staff writers
MONTGOMERY - Clay County forced several early turnovers and cashed them in on its way to a 41-6 defeat of Addison in the first game of the Saturday's inaugural Champions Challenge prep football classic at Cramton Bowl.
The Panthers caused four first-half turnovers and scored three touchdowns in a three-minute span. Two of the scores were the result of Bulldogs fumbles in the first quarter as the Panthers jumped out 20-0.
Clay County halfback Lanell Wilson caught fire early, scoring three of the team's first four touchdowns. He scored on runs of 6 and 50 yards and also caught a perfect touch pass from Chase Horn for a 6-yard score to help build 34-0 halftime lead and put the game out of reach.

"He is a great runner," Clay County coach Danny Horn said. "This is his third year starting and I'm expecting some big things from him."
The Panthers defense, which yielded only 5.9 points per game last season, overwhelmed the Addison offense with its lightning speed, holding the Bulldogs to 37 total yards in the first half. Clay County rolled up 308 of its 416 yards by intermission.
J.D Williams had five tackles and recovered a fumble for the Panthers. He also scored on a 93-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter to cap the scoring. Williams finished as the game's leading rusher with 103 yards on five carries.
Clay County also benefited from its experience. The Panthers return six players on each side of the ball, including a majority of their skill positions. Addison, however, graduated 12 seniors from last season's team.
Blake Turner paced the Bulldogs with 53 yards rushing on 12 carries and had four catches for 48 receiving yards.
Addison cornerback Chaz Cooper injured his neck late in the third quarter and was transported to Jackson Hospital. According to White, Cooper suffered a stinger and was taken to the hospital as a precautionary measure.

Birmingham News Article About Addison

Addison moves up to 2A after a successful 2005
Friday, August 25, 2006
RON INGRAMNews staff writer
Addison High School football coach Randy White gathered his players recently and congratulated them. He then told them some cold, hard facts.
"I told them that each one deserved the ring they had," said White, who guided the Bulldogs to a 14-1 record and the 1A crown in his first season as Addison head coach.
"I then told them that 2005 was now over and to get ready. This year is a new year and it is going to be tough. It's up to them to make their own way this season."
Addison, sixth in the preseason state rankings, moves from 1A to 2A this season and will compete in a region that includes Winston County, Tanner, Phil Campbell, Red Bay, Hatton, West Morgan and Cherokee. Non-region games include old nemesis R.A. Hubbard of Courtland and Winston County rivals Meek and Lynn.
"This is a challenging schedule," said White. "In Class 1A last year, we felt like we had a chance to have a breather on the schedule a time or two. This schedule doesn't allow for that."
And if the regular-season schedule wasn't challenging enough, Addison will also play in the Champions Challenge at Cramton Bowl on Saturday against last year's 2A state champs Clay County (14-1). The Panthers move up to Class 3A this season.
"We lost 12 seniors - 12 very strong seniors," said White. "And Clay County is returning just about everyone. Coach (Danny) Horn and I have talked a lot through the years. I feel like their town (Ashland) is a lot like ours. Football means an awful lot to them and to us."
Among the seniors who graduated is 2005 state final MVP Caleb Parker. The all-purpose halfback was also named the state's Wendy's Heisman winner. Replacing his leadership will be a challenge, White said.
"Someone asked me how I would replace him, and I assured him that we won't. But we have some others I think can step up. Blake Turner is one of those kids. He has great speed, can do a lot of things for us, and he looks ready to be the kind of leader Caleb was."
The Champions Challenge, sponsored by the AHSAA, will be a doubleheader Saturday with Addison and Clay County playing at 3 p.m., followed by 6A defending champion Hoover and last year's 4A champs UMS-Wright at 7 p.m.

Article About Tanner

Tanner using good mix of size and speed to bolster its offense
By Justin Gravesjustin@athensnews-courier.comTANNER – The personnel lining up in Tanner’s backfield may be different this year, but Rattlers coach LaRon White expects the results to be the same.Last year, Tanner featured three of the best running backs in the area, but all three were lost to graduation. White believes their replacements are capable of filling the void.“We are expecting junior running back Jacquez Peoples and a few others to step up and fill that spot,” White said. “Last year, we were fortunate to have three outstanding seniors at running back. We expect who ever takes over that position to give us the same type of effort.”One thing helping White bring his youngsters along is this year’s group of seniors. “We have good players graduate from here every year,” senior receiver Rod Byrd said. “Even though the names change, the expectations are always the same.Green swarmWhite expects Tanner to perform on the offensive side of the ball, but from what he has seen so far, the Rattlers’ defense is its strongest point. He expects this year’s defensive unit to set the tone early with a physical mentality Tanner will need to survive in what might be the strongest 2A region in the state.“With the realignment, an already tough region 8 has gotten tougher,” White said. “That means our defense will have to be strong. Our defense has a chance to be really good.”Even though Tanner lost its entire secondary and a couple of linebackers, White believes the guys on defense will be tough. “Our defense looked really good this spring,” White said. “The main thing is that our guys move and flow to the ball. If they do that, then we’ll be fine. We have some very hard-nosed football players on our defense that are going to play physical and make plays.”White said he is looking to George Adams, Peoples and Keith Shoulders to step up and be leaders on Tanner’s defense. Quick strike RattlersTanner’s offensive philosophy always revolves around its speed, but this year there is a slight twist.“We have more size on our offensive front than we normally have,” White said. “That allows us to line up in different formations and do a few different things.”The centerpiece of the Rattlers’ offense this year will be senior quarterback Demarcus King. With a year of experience running the spread offense, White expects King to be the leader and playmaker the Rattlers’ need to be successful.“I’m a lot more comfortable lining up in the spread this year,” King said. “Toward the end of last season I started making better decisions and we had a lot of success.”White believes Tanner’s strongest aspect on offense is its receivers – led by Byrd and Shoulders. King and Byrd have been a successful combination in every sport they’ve played at Tanner, and at the same time built a strong friendship. King said this closeness makes them even more of a threat.“I can tell what Rod (Byrd) is thinking without him telling me,” King said. “Being that close with your receivers makes things easier as quarterback. We are always on the same page and that’s going to make us better.”Tanner prideWhite said Tanner’s primary goal for this year is the same as it is every year –win the region and go deep in the playoffs. He said that’s what the players expect and they work hard all year to ensure it happens.“That’s what makes playing football at Tanner great,” Byrd said. “Here it’s about pride and tradition. We always have high expectations, but that’s the kind of program you want to be a part of.”White was pleased with his players work ethic over the summer and likes what he has seen in practice so far.“You don’t have to make our guys work hard,” White said. “They expect a lot out of themselves and they want to be successful. We are in a very tough region, but I think with the type of players we have our goals can be accomplished.”
