TANNER — Tanner High football coach Laron White was all smiles when asked about the Rattlers' defensive effort Thursday night in a 28-6 win over Clements.
According to White, Tanner's defensive players did everything short of growing wings in controlling the Colts' offense. The Rattlers held strong twice during the game with Clements inside their 20-yard line.
"Our players flew to the ball tonight on defense," White said. "I wasn't pleased with what I saw in the jamboree last week, and I let our guys know it. I've been on them all week. Well, like I said, they were flying to the ball on defense and I liked what I saw."
The Colts had 208 yards of total offense, 133 of which came from passing.
On Clements first possession of the game, the Colts drove 29 yards to the Rattlers' 1 before running back Jesse Cobb fumbled with Tanner's Delano Yarbrough recovering the ball in the end zone.
Early in the fourth quarter, the Colts started at their own 36 before turning the ball over on downs at the Tanner 5.
"Obviously, those two times we didn't score in the red zone hurt us bad," said Forrest Williams, who coached his first game at Clements. "We have to be more consistent on offense, but I didn't see anything we can't correct."
Williams said the Colts did have some bright spots in the game.
"We forced Tanner into three turnovers," Williams said. "We had a good punt when we needed it and on defense, we made them earn everything they got.
"After the half, I really liked what I saw. We played throw and catch and because of that we scored."
The lone Clements touchdown came with 9:24 left in the third quarter. After Tanner's kick to start the second half, the Colts connected on passes of 23 and 22 yards. After a couple of running plays, Colts' quarterback Cody Arnold hit Jeremy Craig for a 21-yard touchdown pass.
Tanner rolled up 343 yards of total offense. Quarterback Demarcus King completed 9 of 21 passes for 156 yards and one touchdown on a 24-yard completion to Tim Mason with 39 seconds remaining in the first half.
Also in the second quarter, running back Tim Mason scored on a 30-yard around right end.
Jarquise Peoples rushed for Tanner's other two touchdowns. Peoples scored on 3-yard runs in the first and second quarters.
White praised Clements for a hard-fought game.
"I didn't realize they were so big — so tall," White said. "I can tell you one thing, that team is going to be just fine. You could see they were excited about playing football. For that fact, we were excited also. It was a good win for us."
